The Detroit Lions and quarterback Jared Goff agreed to a four-year, $212 million extension with $170 million guaranteed that will keep him in town through 2028.

On Thursday morning, Goff spoke with reporters after officially signing the deal and mentioned “security” and the no-trade clause as important factors in the deal, per ESPN’s Eric Woodyard:

“It was mostly security. You can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn’t really the thing that was ever something I was extremely concerned with. It was the security and the no-trade clause and all of that stuff, knowing that all that was in there and feeling secure in knowing that I can finally put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”

Goff has been great in Detroit since landing there via trade in 2021 from the Los Angeles Rams, throwing for 12,258 yards and 78 touchdowns with 27 interceptions. He just helped lead the Lions to their second-ever NFC Championship Game appearance last January, and Detroit’s championship window remains wide open with him aboard.

Goff came to Detroit in a time of great uncertainty for both himself and the Lions, who had just transitioned to a new regime under general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell.

He was essentially booted out of L.A. in favor of ex-Lions QB Matt Stafford, who he was traded for in the aforementioned deal, despite signing a four-year, $134 million extension with the Rams in 2019.

So obviously, Goff should enjoy the security that a no-trade clause gives him this time around, as he won’t have to worry about Detroit changing course two years into the deal like L.A. did.

Locking down Goff long-term also helps Detroit keep its core together for the foreseeable future. The team has already signed First Team All-Pros Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to extensions, and that trio should help keep the Lions’ offense as one of the best in the league.
