New US CISO appointments, July 2021

The upper ranks of corporate security are seeing a high rate of change as companies try to adapt to the evolving threat landscape. Many companies are hiring a chief security officer (CSO) or chief information security officer (CISO) for the first time to support a deeper commitment to information security.

Kelly Isikoff joins Common Securitization Solutions as CISO

Kelly Isikoff, CISO, Common Securitization Solutions

Isikoff joins the FinTech firm, a joint venture owned by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where she served as Cyber Security Business and Strategy Advisor. She has also held CISO positions in the insurance/reinsurance sectors at Axis Capital and RenaissanceRe, as well as other information security leadership roles including Executive Director and CISO at JPMorgan and Senior Vice President, Global Information Security at Citigroup.  (H/t Cision)

Karl Mattson joins Noname Security as company’s first CISO
Prior to joining the API security company, Mattson held CISO roles at PennyMac Loan Services and City National Bank. He is a senior fellow at the Technological Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota, is an advisory board member for Cyberstarts, and is a venture advisor at YL Ventures. Jacob DePriest joins GitHub as VP, Security Operations
In his new role, DePriest will lead GitHub’s Security Operations team under CSO Mike Hanley. DePriest comes to GitHub from the National Security Agency, where he built the NSA’s Developer Experience function from the ground up and was in charge of fostering private and public sector engagement with the open source community.

JR Riding joins MultiPlan as CISO
Riding brings more than 20 years of experience in technology to the new role, most recently serving as CISO at ION Group, a global technology company with offices in 30 countries. (H/t businesswire)

Joseph Zhou joins Linode as CISO
Prior to joining the cloud hosting provider, Zhou held CISO roles at Evive, Transworld Systems, and Topco Associates. He is a cyber security graduate program advisor at Northeastern University. (H/t helpnetsecurity)

John McClure named VP and CISO at Sinclair Broadcast Group
Prior to taking the newly created role with the media giant, McClure held several security leadership roles at Laureate International Universities and most recently served as CISO. He reports to Brian Bark, SVP & CIO. Hardik Parekh joins Five9 as CISO (H/t businesswire)

John Garstka joins the Department of Defense as acting CISO for acquisition and sustainment
Garstka, a former U.S. Air Force officer and a cybersecurity specialist, has held leadership roles within the Pentagon’s Office of the CISO since 2012, most recently as director of cyber programs. (H/t FedScoop)

Mark Breunig joins the Department of Homeland Security as cybersecurity adviser

J.R. Tietsort joins Aura as CISO

Gunter Ollmann joins Devo Technology as CSO
Prior to joining the security analytics company, Ollmann served as CSO in the CSO cloud and AI security division at Microsoft and as CSO at Vectra AI. He also held CTO positions at NCC Group, IOActive, and Damballa and was chief security strategist at working within the CTO Office at IBM.

Ben Nelson joins FICO as CISO

John Cleveland named deputy state CISO at California Department of Technology
Prior to being appointed to his new role, Cleveland served for the past two years as the state’s chief of security operations. Reza Zaheri joins Quantum Metric as CISO
Zaheri bring 18 years of experience managing cyber security for Fortune 100 companies to his new role at the user experience monitoring platform provider. Prior to joining Quantum Metric, Zaheri served as director of digital forensics, incident response and security awareness at DirecTV and AT&T before founding a security training company, 1:M Cyber Security. New CISO appointents, June 2021

Akamai names Dr. Boaz Gelbord as CSO 
Prior to joining the content delivery network (CDN) services provider, Dr. Gelbord most recently held IT and security leadership roles at Dun&BradstreetBloomberg LP and Amplify EducationHe also served as an appointed member of the President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee Cyber Moonshot Subcommittee where he advised the White House on cybersecurity strategy. Dr. Gelbord replaces longtime Akamai CSO Andy Ellis. 

Rishi Mehta joins Cyble as CISO
Prior to joining the threat intelligence company, Mehta most recently served as senior director, technology at Target. Mehta is certified in ISO 27001, Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and is currently pursuing an executive post-graduate diploma in digital business in collaboration with MIT and the Columbia Business School. PG&E appoints Jerry L. Davis as vice president and CISO 
Reporting to PG&E CIOAjay Waghray, Davis will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining enterprise technology security at the San Francisco-based utility. Prior to joining PG&E, Davis founded technology risk advisory firm Gryphon X, LLC, where he counseled corporate clients on strategic cybersecurity problem solving and cybersecurity readiness and served as a retained expert witness on cybersecurity matters. Davis served for more than 20 years in executive-level roles in physical, personnel, and cyber security, including as CIO for the NASA Ames Research Center, CISO for the U.S. Department of Education, and Deputy Assistant Security for Cybersecurity for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Ben Nelson joins FICO as CISO

Dave MacKinnon appointed CSO at N-able

Gary Owen joins iCapital Network as CISO
Prior to joining the financial technology platform provider, Owen served as CISO at Wells Fargo and Warner Media. JupiterOne appoints Uber CISO Latha Maripuri to the company’s board of directors
In her current role Maripuri oversees cybersecurity engineering, technical privacy and physical security systems for the ride sharing company. Prior to joining Uber, she was the global CISO at News Corp. Maripuri also served as a global business and technology executive at IBM, where she helped shape the IBM Security division.

NTT Research names Matthew Ireland CISO
Ireland joined NTT in 2016, serving in a variety of security leadership roles. Most recently he was virtual CISO for NTT Research beginning in September 2019.
