The upper ranks of corporate security are seeing a high rate of change as companies try to adapt to the evolving threat landscape. Many companies are hiring a chief security officer (CSO) or chief information security officer (CISO) for the first time to support a deeper commitment to information security.

New CISO appointments, May 2021
SolarWinds appoints Tim Brown as CISO, VP of security
Brown joined the company in 2017 as vice president, security with responsibilities spanning internal IT security, product security and security strategy, and has now expanded his role as SolarWinds CISO. He has over 25 years of experience developing and implementing security technology and is an avid inventor, holding 18 issued patents on security-related topics.
New CISO appointments, April 2021
Gary Owen joins iCapital Network as CISO
Prior to joining the financial technology platform provider, Owen served as CISO at Wells Fargo and Warner Media. He has held security leadership roles at Promontory Financial Group, Goldman Sachs & Co., and Citigroup and is currently on the board of the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC), having previously served as the organization’s chairman and vice chairman. Sounil Yu steps into the CISO role at JupiterOne
Prior to joining the cyber asset management company, Yu was the CISO-in-Residence for YL Ventures. He is the creator of the Cyber Defense Matrix and the DIE Triad. Yu previously served as chief security scientist at Bank of America.
JupiterOne appoints Uber CISO Latha Maripuri to the company’s board of directors
In her current role Maripuri oversees cybersecurity engineering, technical privacy and physical security systems for the ride sharing company. Prior to joining Uber, she was the global CISO at News Corp. Maripuri also served as a global business and technology executive at IBM, where she helped shape the IBM Security division.
Mad Mobile appoints Anil Varghese as global CISO
Anil Varghese, a renowned industry veteran brings over two decades of information security and risk management leadership experience to the firm. He most recently served as SVP/CISO for Exeter Finance, a Blackstone portfolio company.
Timothy Youngblood joins T-Mobile as SVP, CSO & product security officer
The veteran CISO most recently served as corporate VP & CISO at McDonald’s. Before that he held the CISO role at Kimberly-Clark and Dell.
NTT Research names Matthew Ireland CISO
Ireland joined NTT in 2016, serving in a variety of security leadership roles. Most recently he was virtual CISO for NTT Research beginning in September 2019. Prior to NTT, Ireland served as enterprise availability engineer at Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield and as director of information security at Harland Clarke Holdings, a financial services corporation. Barbara Kissner joins Tassat as the FinTech’s first CISO
Kissner brings to her new role 25 years’ experience as a CIO, CCO and in cybersecurity for banks, consultancies and insurance companies. Most recently she served as EVP & CIO at Amalgamated Bank. (H/t Tassat)
Paul Suarez joins Casey’s General Stores as the retailer’s first CISO

Intel 471 hires Brandon Hoffman as company’s first CISO
Hoffman is returning to the cybercrime intelligence provider, having previously served as the company’s Vice President of Intelligence Solutions. Prior to his return to Intel 471, Hoffman most recently served as CISO and head of security strategy at IT service management company Netenrich. Mike Britton joins Abnormal Security as the startup’s first CISO
Prior to joining the email security platform provider, Britton most recently served as global chief security and privacy officer at Alliance Data. Tim Roemer replaces Gil Orrantia as Director of Homeland Security for the State of Arizona

F5 promotes Gail Coury to SVP and CISO
Coury joined F5 in 2018, serving as VP and GM of the Silverline managed service offerings. Prior to joining F5, Coury held CISO roles at Oracle Cloud, PeopleSoft, and J.D. Edwards. Confluent hires Cory Scott as company’s first CISO
Prior to joining the streaming platform provider, Scott was Google’s head of security and product privacy for their Devices and Services division and served as CISO at LinkedIn.
Robinhood names Caleb Sima CSO

MassMutual appoints Ariel Weintraub as CISO

H1 appoints Julie Stern as SVP of Engineering and CISO
Stern brings more than 30 years of leadership experience at healthcare and technology organizations to her role at H1 where she is running the 60+ person engineering team for the global healthcare organization. Cone Health names Doug McMillian CISO
In his role as the first CISO at the North Carolina-based network of healthcare providers, McMillian will oversee the information security program and establish cybersecurity and governance practices. LogMeIn appoints Michael Oberlaender as global CISO
Oberlaender is a veteran CISO, author, and security advisor, with more than 20 years of experience in security leadership roles. Prior to joining the remote access provider, Oberlaender was CISO at a global supply chain software provider, serving as the organization’s first global CISO and GVP.
Grainger appoints Julie Myerholtz as VP and CISO
Myerholtz brings more than 20 years of experience in enterprise risk management, information security, data privacy, and IT operations and governance to her new role at the industrial supply company. US Marine Corps names Renata Spinks acting CISO

Northwestern Mutual appoints Laura Deaner as CISO
In her new role, Deaner will lead the Enterprise Information Risk & Cybersecurity team and be responsible for spearheading Northwestern Mutual’s information security strategy. She brings 21 years of experience working in cybersecurity for multi-national Fortune 500 companies and most recently was CISO at S&P Global. Deaner is the first woman to hold the CISO position at Northwestern Mutual.
Voyager Digital names Daniel Costantino CISO
Prior to joining the crypto-asset broker, Costantino was CISO and deputy CIO at Penn Medicine. He is also a board member of H-ISAC. During his time at Penn Medicine, Costantino won two CSO50 awards. (H/t MSSP Alert)
