On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C. to march in support of gun control laws and endings to gun violence and mass shootings at the March For Our Lives. The march was planned as a response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month as students stepped up to fight for the regulations many adults have been unable to achieve. Although the official report has not come from the D.C. law enforcement with a number of attendees yet, stunning aerial photographs show streets jammed with protestors marching peacefully. Estimates from two other sources, however, give wildly different ideas of how many people actually attended.
But depending on whose data you look at, the number was either much, much higher, or much, much lower. The March For Our Lives organizers’ estimate attendance in D.C. to be around 850,000 people—well exceeding expectations. On the other hand, a Virginia-based company, the Digital Design & Imaging Service, estimated that the crowd size was around 202,796 people, with a 15 percent margin of error and a peak in crowd size around 1 P.M.
The Women’s March is “likely” the largest single-day demonstration in recorded U.S. history, according to the Washington Post. If the March For Our Lives organizers’ 850,000 figure is correct, this will have far exceeded that record. (We’ll be sure to update the story when official law enforcement data comes in.)
In addition to the crowd that gathered in D.C., there were approximately 800 other events to protest gun violence held all over the the world on Friday and Saturday. Cities like New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, and Baltimore held rallies. And other countries like New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Belgium, India, and Antarctica had marches as well, according to NBC News.
